Harrison Darnell "Don" Zanders Sr., 68, of Waterloo, IA, was called home to a resting place in the presence of God on Saturday, May 27, 2023. Don was born on December 11, 1954, in Leland, MS, the son of Willie Sr. and Janie Zanders.
Don attended Waterloo East High School where he was known for his many achievements in wrestling. He also worked in the foundry at John Deere where he retired after 32 years. Don was proud of his military service with the United States Marine Corps where he served from 1973-1975.
Don was a skilled mechanic who could fix anything. He took great pride in helping others. He would often repair vehicles, mow lawns, and remove snow for friends and neighbors. Don was charismatic and made friends everywhere he traveled. He loved telling jokes and making people laugh in social settings and while playing a competitive game of pool. In addition, Don was a member of the Swingers Gold Golf Club, and a founding member and former President of the Inner City Motorcycle Club. Don was a spiritual man, who was a minister in training with Ambassadors for Christ. Don loved all that he knew and lived his life by doing it his way.
It is well known that Don loved his children, grandchildren, and family. He is survived by his five children, Jeannie (Sheriffe) Pretlow, Perez (Luciana) Zanders Sr., Harrison "DJ" II (Trisha) Zanders, Ayesha Harris, and Chateela (Alveno) Johnson; 14 grandchildren; siblings Marguerite (Ralph) Samuels, Charles (Margaret) Zanders, Willie Jr. (Mary) Zanders, Dr. Faye Scott, David (Vicki) Zanders, Tewana (Maurice) Jones, Sharon (Mike) Ackiss, and Kelvin Sr. (Barbara) Zanders.
The family will receive friends at Locke at Tower Park, 4140 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, from 4-7 PM with "Happy Hour" - a time of reflection and sharing beginning at 6 PM. Homegoing services for Don will be Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel on Thursday, June 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM.
